This Data Insight seeks to further explore firm-level characteristics underlying these wider trends. Using BDR data we offer both a descriptive analysis and a series of regressions to detail Northern Ireland’s export and import performance by markets, business size, sector and sub-regional geography. The analysis also explores questions such as which firms are more or less likely to be exporters, importers, or both, and the characteristics of businesses by the intensity of their exporting performance. The relationships between exporting and productivity and exporting and wages are also analysed.
This project uses novel datasets and input-output (IO) modelling to investigate the differences between exporting and non-exporting firms in Northern Ireland, and to understand the scale of employment supported by exporting in Northern Ireland.
This Data Insight examines the differences in productivity across the 11 local government districts in Northern Ireland, using data from the Northern Ireland Annual Business Inquiry. We focus on how labour, capital, and government subsidies are associated with the gross value added (the value generated by any unit engaged in the production of goods and services) at the enterprise level.
The Earnings and Employees Study (EES) 2011 links wage and employment data from the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) for 2011 with detailed individual and household characteristics information, including religious denomination and community background, from the 2011 Census. Analysing this linked data, we find no evidence of either a Catholic wage penalty or premium in 2011, with estimated wage gaps small in magnitude and statistically insignificant in unadjusted and adjusted models.
This project responds to an ESRC funding call to expand the use of the Business Data for Research (Northern Ireland) database by researchers, with particular focus on informing the Department for the Economy’s “10X Economy” vision. It explores and reviews newly available micro-business data, paying attention to its useability in evaluating Northern Irish trade.
While people with severe mental illness are at high risk of chronic physical health conditions and premature mortality, little attention has been given to oral health disparities.
